Leaflets elongate - ovate, 5 x 1 mm, base oblique, fresh green, glabrous, close-ranked. Pod flattened, up to 20 x 3 cm, red-green to brilliant red becoming brown.

Tree; Notes: Tall tree, plentiful in riverine woodland. Ethnobotanical Voucher : Mukotokoto (Lozi). Ash from thorns crushed, rubbed on baby's stomach to ease cramps; njou (Kwe) -bark+knobs for stomach ache.

Creeper; Notes: Vigorous creeper, growing on fine, grey sand in disturbed area on road verge. Also found in adjoining Aristida/Hyparrhenia grassland. Only male flowers seen, no fruits. Insect pollinators collected for identification. Locally abundant. Some individuals with leaves grey-green, prostrate; others deeper in bush with leaves yellow-green, upright, less incised.

Leaves opposite but often clustered, simple, subsessile; lamina obovate, apex acute, base cuneate, margin entire but sinuate, dull green, thinly textured both surfaces densely pubescent, persistent, up to 30 x 12 mm. Inflorescence solitary, axillary, subsessile, partially hidden by foliar leaves, 7-8 mm in diameter. Florets yellow, inconspicuous. Fruit a spiny achene. Glume membranous, deep purple, minutely pubescent with white ciliate indumentum, yellowish awn exerted about 2 mm beyond spikelet. 2 flowers/spikelet. Base of raceme axis densely pubescent with long white hairs scattered over entire length.

Awn extremely long, up to 7.5 cm long, rigid, whip-like, contorted, densely pubescent, basally yellow-brown. Anthers large, up to 3 mm long, apically exerted. Stigma branches laterally exerted.

Surface prominently spiny, awnless, but apex aristate, entirely deciduous.

Inflorescence a panicle of spaced racemes, ellipsoid in outline, 10-15 cm long, borne on extremely slender, glabrous peduncle. Spathe lacking. Raceme about 9 cm long, not rigid, alternate, densely velutinous at point of junction between primary and secondary axes. Spikelet ellipsoid 4 x 2 mm, apex aristate. Glumes membranous, greenish, with long white indumentum concentrated at base and along margins. 2 flowers/spikelet, lower sterile, upper both male and female. Stigma branches dark brown.
