Description:
Perennial herbs with annual prostrate or scandent, smooth stems, up to 2 m long. Leaves palmately 5-lobed, finely puberulous below, deeply cordate at the base; margin almost entire to distinctly toothed or lobed. Flowers in axillary clusters; male flowers on a long pedicel; female flowers sessile, pale yellow or white. Fruit up to 9 × 6.5 mm in subsessile clusters, ellipsoid, not rostrate, hairless, bright red when ripe.

Derivation of specific name: bainesii: after Thomas Baines (1820-75), artist and naturalist
Habitat: In deciduous woodland and scrub.
Altitude range: 100 - 1050 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
