Description: |
Shrub or tree with a light brown, reddish-brown or grey fibrous bark; branches with subcircular scars of fallen leaves and stipules. Leaves opposite, narrowly to broadly elliptic or obovate-elliptic, 6-12 cm long, base narrowed into the petiole, midrib rather prominent beneath; margin entire and somewhat rolled under; petiole 1-3 cm long; stipules up to 4 cm long. Flowers axillary, solitary on peduncles c. 1 cm long. calyx pinkish-green to reddish-brown, c. 12-lobed, 1.5-2 cm long with an obconical tube 1-2 cm long. Petals oblong, c. 1.5 cm long, 2-lobed at the apex, leathery, hairy at the base and on the margins, white or cream but soon turning brown; stamens c. 24, paired opposite the petals. Fruit up to 15 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, shallowly longitudinally ridged, held in the remaining calyx. |
