Trees, producing knee-like aerial roots; trunk basally buttressed, often with a cone of stilt roots at base; leaf scares showing evidence of 3 vascular bundles. Leaves entire. Inflorescence cymes 1-5 flowered, pedunculate; flowers generally nodding; calyx accrescent, tube extending beyond ovary, lobes 4-14(-16), lanceolate; petals as many as calyx lobes, usually bi-lobed fringed with hairs and/or bristles. Fruit campanulate. Seeds usually solitary. Worldwide: Species 6 from East Africa to Australia and the Pacific Islands. Mozambique: 1 taxon. |
