Description: |
Shrub or small tree up to 6 m tall with young branches pubescent. Leaves ovate to ovate-oblong, 4·5–12·5 cm long, rounded or slightly cordate at the base, very sparsely pubescent or hairless on both surfaces, tertiary venation reticulate; margin finely crenate-serrate with the teeth somewhat glandular; petiole up to 10 mm long, pubescent; stipules linear, up to 8 mm long, finely pubescent. Inflorescences leaf-opposed, 2–3-flowered; peduncles 2–4 mm long, pubescent; pedicels up to 5 mm long, pubescent; bracts similar to the stipules, up to 7 mm. long. Sepals linear-oblong, 1·5–2·5 cm long, finely woolly outside, hairless inside. Petals circular, up to 10 mm in diameter,with a small claw c. 1 mm long, pinkish or purple. Ovary 4-lobed, hairy; style c. 10 mm long, hairless with broad stigma-lobes. Fruit 4-lobed, up to 2·8 cm in diameter, densely rusty hairy. |
Notes: | Superficially similar to Grewia orientalis var. littoralis which is also found in coastal habitats further South in Mozambique but that taxon generally forms a low spreading shrub with almost prostrate branches and has flowers with much longer, oblong-lanceolate petals. |
