Description: |
Perennial herb or small shrub up to 1.5 m high; older stemswoody. Axillary spines often present but small, usually 4-rayed,1.5-7.5 mm long. Leaves opposite elliptic or ovate-elliptic, 3-10 cm long,mostly hairless except from strigose hairs on margin, midrib and veins beneath; margin entire; petiole up to 18 mm long. Inflorescence a terminal spike, mostly up to 8 cm long, rarely up to 22 cm long, contracted below, more widely spaced above; bracts more or less spreading, oblanceolate up to 26 mm long, lowermost leaf-like; bracteoles lanceolate-spinose, up to 12.5 mm long, whitish-green. Outer calyx lobes subequal, ovate up to 12 and 16 mm long; margin often rolled under, ending in an apical spine. Corolla 29-39 mm long with four upper lobes and one lower lobe, all more or less equal in length, hairy on the outside, from pale yellow to orange, rarely brick red. Capsule 15-18 mm long, densely velvety. |
Notes: | This species is very similar to Barleria ameliae. It can be distinguished by the longer, less appressed hairs on the calyx; longer lower corolla lobe; more compacted inflorescence and more densely velvety fruit. |
Derivation of specific name: | delagoensis: of the Delagoa area, a historic reference to southern Mozambique. |
Habitat: | In coastal bushland and scrub, dry coastal forest, lowland riverine areas and in coconut plantations,usually on sandy soils. |
