Description:
Shrub-like perennial herb, up to 1.5 m tall, more or less woody at the base. Stems with slender axillary spines. Leaves opposite, ovate-lanceolate, up to 5 × 2 cm, tapering to a sharp point. Flowers axillary and terminal, yellow to orange; bracts narrowly ovate, tapering to a sharp spine-like tip.

Habitat: In mopane and Acacia woodland and dry open riverine forest and thicket, on sandy soils.
Altitude range: 100 - 1100 m
Flowering time:Jan - Apr
Worldwide distribution: Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, ?Botswana and Caprivi Namibia.
