Description:
Erect perennial herb up to c. 1m high, with annual stems growing from strong woody rootstock. Most parts densely hairy with Y-shaped hairs. Leaves sessile, oblong to lanceolate-oblong, up to 8 cm long, cordate or subcordate at the base, uppersurface more or less wrinkled and thinly hairy, more densely hairy and with prominent venation beneath; margin subentire or sparsely serrate. Capitula numerous in dense terminal clusters. Involucres up to 6 mm long, campanulate. Phyllaries several-seriate, more or less densely hairy, becoming purple at the apex. Corollas purple or sometimes pinkish, 5-7 mm long. Achenes 2-2.5 mm long, obscurely 4-ribbed, densely long silvery hairy; outer pappus of short, scale-like setae; inner of numerous, whitish barbellate setae, 405 mm long.
