Synonyms: Polydora bainesii (Oliv. & Hiern) H. Rob.
Vernonia buchananii Baker
Common names:
Frequency:
Status: Native
Description:
Perennial herb with many annual stems growing from a woody rootstock. It may grow into a subshrub up to 1 m but often the stems are more spreading decumbent or ascending. Leaves often close together and overlapping, (in this subsp.) linear, up to 30 mm long; margin markedly revolute. Capitula solitary at the ends of the branches. Involucres 10-15 mm long with bracts 6-8-seriate, closely appressed and overlapping, purple-tipped. Florets purple, c. 10 mm long. Achenes 3-4 mm linear, minutely glandular, 5-6-angled; pappus with short narrow scales outside and whitish, barbellate setae, 6-8 mm long inside.
Notes: Subsp. bainesii is said to be the taxon occurring in the border highlands of Mozambique. The specimen in the images, however, shows slightly wider, narrowly elliptic leaves without a conspicuously revolute margin. This is more conform with subsp. wildii (Merxm.) Wild, a taxon so far only recorded from Zimbabwe.
Derivation of specific name: bainesii: after Thomas Baines (1820-75), artist and naturalist
