This species is very similar to Verbena bonariensis. It can be distinguished by the slightly smaller flowers which do generally not overtop the tuft of bracts at the top of the spikes. Also by the floral bracts which are as long as or slightly longer than the calyces and the longer, whitish hairs on the undersurfaces of the leaves.
