Lianas, twining; rarely erect shrubs. Leaves opposite, lamina cordate; Inflorescence umbel-like, paniculate or raceme-like; terminal or extra-axillary; pedunculated. Flowers calyx 5-lobed, sepals overlapping; basal glands or scales often present; corolla urceolate or campanulate, throat often hairy; lobes twisted to the right; corona lobes 5, erect acuminate, fleshy. Fruit follicles, mostly thick, acuminate; smooth or longitudinally winged. Seeds comose. Derivation of name: after William Marsden, British traveller and plant collector, 1754-1836 Worldwide: 125 species in the tropics. Mozambique: 8 taxa.
