Description of the genus

Similar to Vernonia but differing in the following characteristics:

  • inflorescence pyramidal or thyrsoid in form (corymbose in Vernonia);
  • stems woody and the species often shrubs or trees (more often herbaceous and arising from creeping rootstock in Vernonia);
  • anther bases often with prominent tails (tails absent in Vernonia).

Derivation of name: From the name Vernonia, the genus it closely resembles, together with an ending derived from anthera (anther) and oura (tail), referring to the frequently tailed anther bases.

Worldwide: 62 species occurring in the neotropics

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
