Description of the genus

Herbs or small shrubs. Flowers borne in axillary dichasial cymes. Calyx actinomorphic, 5-lobed; tube longer than lobes. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip 2-lobed; lower lip 3-lobed; tube longer than the lobes. Fertile stamens 2; filaments of stamens and staminodes didynamous, borne in pairs in the throat of the corolla. Fruit a capsule with inelastic placental bases. Ovary with 2 ovules in each loculus. Seeds borne on retinacula, bearing hygroscopic hairs all over the surface.

Worldwide: 4 species in southern Africa

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
