Herbs, erect or creeping, spreading. Leaves opposite; lamina small, fleshy, rounded, often fragrant when crushed. Inflorescence solitary, axillary or in terminal racemes. Sepals (4or)5 free, imbricate, upper largest; corolla tubular, limb patent, conspicuously or obscurely 2-lipped, lower lip tri-lobed, upper lip bi-lobed. Fruit capsules, ovoid or globose, 2-grooved, 4-valved. Seeds numerous, minute. Worldwide: 55 species in the tropics and sub-tropics, mainly in America. Mozambique: 3 taxa. |
