Herbs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite,
rarely in threes. Inflorescences terminal, racemose or paniculate. Flowers in 2-12-flowered whorls; bracts persistent. Calyx 5-toothed, 2-lipped; upper tooth largest, broadly ovate-circular; 4 lower teeth ± equal or the 2 lower longer than the 2 laterals, ovate-triangular to
subulate. Corolla 2-lipped; upper lip erect, 3-4-lobed; lower lip horizontal to recurved, concave to boat-shaped. Stamens 4,
exserted; lower pair inserted near mouth, upper pair inserted further back in corolla tube. Nutlets subcircular to oblong. Worldwide: 40 species in the Old World tropics Mozambique: 4 taxa. |
