Description of the genus

Twining herbs with long, much-branched stems to 9 m. Leaves fleshy, petiolate. Flowers bisexual in usually simple spikes. Bracteoles 2, connate in a cup. Perianth urceolate, white, red or purple. Filaments erect and straight in bud. Fruit spherical.

Derivation of name: Native Malabar name

Worldwide: 5 species; 3 in Madagascar, 1 in Africa and one pantropical.

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
