Description:
Rhizome creeping, rhizome scales brown, linear and tapering to a fine point 4.5–5 × 0.5 mm, with a dark central stripe and pale margins. Fronds tufted, 22–55 cm tall. Stipe purple-brown or chestnut to black, 3–14 cm long, glabrous except at the extreme base. Lamina narrowly oblong-lanceolate in outline, 17–49 × 3–8.5 cm, 1–2-pinnate, if 1-pinnate then pinnae deeply pinnatifid; pinnae in 15–18 pairs, oblong-lanceolate in outline, 1–6 × 0.5–2.8 cm; pinnules or ultimate segments narrowly oblong, 0.5–1 cm × 2–5 mm, apex rounded, crenate to pinnatifid, glabrous; venation obscure. Sori minute, less than 1 mm in diameter, on margins of segments; indusium minute, membranous, entire.
Notes: Differs from other Cheilanthes species by lacking a powdery substance on the undersurface of the lamina, the lamina is glabrous on both surfaces and the fronds are narrowly elliptic & 2-3 pinnatifid.
