Notes: | H. mossambicensis has been sunk under H. platycalyx by some authors (Vollesen (1980) and on the African Plants Database). However, in the opinion of Ernst Schmidt (pers. comm., December 2012), H. mossambicensis deserves to be retained as a separate species. He comments that the epicalyx bracts of H. mossambicensis are very narrow, almost linear while those of H. platycalyx are spathulate. Furthermore H. platycalyx is usually an erect plant whereas H. mossambicensis is a normally shaped shrub, which can attain 4 m. He adds that the leaf shape, venation and leaf margin are different as well as the habitat. |
