Description:
Robust herbaceous climbing perennial. Stems long, somewhat bamboo-like, often reaching the tree canopy. Leaves alternate, linear-lanceolate, 10-22 cm long, sheating at the base; apex modified into a coiled tendril; margin entire. Flowers in branched terminal heads, creamy-white. Fruit a red berry.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: guineensis: from Guinea in West Africa.
Habitat: Dense woodland, coastal and riverine forest.

Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa and KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, South Africa but in the Flora Zambesiaca area only known from Mozambique.
