Description: |
A soft-wooded shrub 1–4 m high, sometimes a liane up to c. 6 m or more, rarely a tree up to c. 8 m tall; flowering branches green-brownish to dark brown, stout, cylindrical, hollow, sometimes bristly hairy on most parts. , sometimes reddish or reddish-yellow on the petioles. Leaves opposite or 3-whorled, ovate-orbicular to ovate or broadly elliptic, 3.7–21 cm long, mostly cordate at the base, slightly pubescent above, more densely so beneath ; margin usually entire or rarely irregularly crenate; petiole 1–16 cm long sometimes with reddish-yellow hairs. Inflorescences in few-flowered heads, together forming one lax terminal leafy inflorescence up to 17 cm long; pedicels up to 4 cm long; bracteoles linear. Calyx 1.7–2.8 cm long, obconical at the base; lobes up to 1.5 cm long, and 1 cm wide at the base, erect, sparsely velvety. Corolla white or creamy-white, sweet-scented; tube 7–10 cm long, slender, glandular-pubescent on the outside; lobes oblong or elliptic, 1.3–2 cm long and 5–9 mm wide. Stamens and style exserted for c. 3.5 cm. Fruit 1–1.5 cm long and 1.2–1.8 cm wide, black when dry. |
