Usually annual herb, up to 1·2 m high; stems simple or moderately branched, fleshy, hairless or sometimes somewhat pubescent on younger parts. Leaves mostly spirally arranged, lanceolate-elliptic, ovate-lanceolate or very rarely obovate-lanceolate, 3–10 cm long, usually dark green and hairless above, greyish-green and usually shortly hairy beneath; margin finely toothed; secondary veins 6–10 pairs, more or less prominent beneath; petiole rather slender, 0·5–4 cm long, usually hairless, with stipular glands at the base. Flowers 2–6 in axillary clusters, very rarely solitary, orange-red to scarlet, shaded yellow, or orange, greenish-yellow tipped; peduncle not more than 4 mm long; bracts lanceolate-triangular, up to 4 mm long, hairy or hairless; pedicels rather slender, up to 4 cm long, hairless or sometimes pubescent. flowers horn-shaped or helmet-shaped, gradually tapering into the spur; spur up to 8 mm long, sharply recurved, more or less cylindric, somewhat thickened at the tip, entire or very rarely slightly 2-lobed. Capsule 1·5–2 cm. long, usually hairless. |
