Description:
Compact, sometimes straggling, shrub or small tree, rarely a liana; bark pale grey, hairless, or occasionally pubescent. Leaves broadly elliptic to round or broadly oblong-elliptic, 2.2–13 × 1–7.5 cm, often one in opposite pair larger than the other, drying pale greyish to bronze above, obtuse to rounded at both base and apex, hairless or sometimes pubescent beneath; lateral nerves in 4 main pairs; domatia absent or inconspicuous; petiole 2–10 mm long; stipules ovate or sometimes narrowly ovate, 4–16 × 2–10 mm, acuminate, light brown when dry. Flowers functionally unisexual, 5–6-merous, male flowers borne in 3–20-flowered, sessile or rarely shortly pedunculate umbels; female flowers solitary; pedicels hairless or sometimes pubescent, 3–7 mm long in male flowers and up to 10 mm long in female flowers. Calyx tube reduced in male flowers, 1.75–2.5 mm long in female flowers. Corolla whitish or yellowish-green, short-lived; tube c. 1.5 mm long with a ring of deflexed hairs at the throat inside; lobes triangular-ovate, 1.25–1.5 mm wide at base, often with a few hairs at the apex outside, erect. Fruit flattened obovoid, 7–12 mm long, not indented at the apex, dark maroon when mature; calyx lobes persistent; pedicel lengthening to 20 mm.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: mombazense: of Mombasa in Kenya where the type specimen was collected.
Habitat: On calcareous soil
Altitude range: 250 - 300 m
