Description: |
Low-growing perennial herb, with milky latex. Leaves densely crowded at the base, linear or linear-lanceolate, markedly discolorous, upper surface green with a sunken midvein, sparsely to densely bristly, lower surface white-tomentose except for the green midvein. |
Notes: | Unusually, outside of the tribe Lactucae, this species produces milky latex. |
Derivation of specific name: | krebsiana: after Georg Ludwig Engelhard Krebs (1792-1844), a German emigrant to South Africa, apothecary, naturalist, chemist, botanist and botanical collector; serrulata: minutely serrate, toothed like a saw-blade. |
Habitat: | An attractive species of grassland and seasonally wet ground, often appearing early in Spring in burnt areas. |
