Description:
Erect annual herb. Stems covered in rough hairs. Leaves (sub)opposite, elliptic to ovate with a rather long pointed tip, up to 13 × 8 cm, 3-veined from the base, sparsely hairy; margin serrate-crenate. Capitula somewhat long and narrow, c. 1.2 × 0.5 cm. Involucral bracts c. 1 cm long, oblong-elliptic, hairy and glandular on the outside. Florets whitish, sometimes with short, inconspicuous 2-3-toothed rays.
Notes: Beentje, Jeffrey & Hind in FTEA Compositae 3: 737 (2005) treat Blainvillea gayana as conspecific with B. acmella (L.) Phillipson but this does not seem to be universally accepted.
Derivation of specific name: gayana: after Claude Gay, 1800-1873, French natural historian.
Habitat: A weed of disturbed areas and cultivation, mostly growing in shaded areas.
