Description: |
Shrub or tree, 3–6 m tall, hairless; young branches covered with light rusty-brown or creamish-coloured bark. Leaves usually restricted to new growth, more or less broadly elliptic to almost round,5.4–13.8 cm long, thinly textured, dull or rarely somewhat glossy above, veins prominent on both surfaces, lateral nerves in 5–6 main pairs; domatia pubescent; margin often wavy; petioles 3–6 mm long; stipules triangular, 2–3 mm long. Flowers 6–8-merous, in 1-5-flowered clusters at the nodes on older stems. Corolla tube 6–10 mm long, 2–3 mm wide at throat; lobes more or less oblong, rounded, 7–12 mm long. Fruit pale green turning blackish, 0.9–1.9 cm long, ribbed, occasionally beaked, minutely puberulous. |
Notes: | Due to the destruction of the original type specimen, a specimen from Mozambique was designated as the neotype. |
Derivation of specific name: | zanguebariae: of Zanzibar, a misleading name since the species occurring on Zanzibar is now considered different and is called C. pseudozanguebarica(see note above). |
