Description:
Shrub or small tree, armed with woody spines, usually in opposite pairs but sometimes alternate. Branches often spreading or trailing; young stems densely hairy and lenticellate. Leaves in clusters on short side shoots, just below the spines,usually young and just developing at time of flowering, obovate, 3-10 cm long, densely velvety on both surfaces, especially when young, veining indented above. Flowers in 1-3-flowered clusters, white, fading to yellow, sweetly scented. Fruit broadly ellipsoid, c. 2.5 cm in diameter, ribbed, velvety, crowned by the calyx lobes.
Notes: See the similar C. swynnertonii for comparison.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: Various types of woodland, including Brachystegia, mopane and miombo, overgrazed land, grassland, in sandy soils and on granite outcrops.
Altitude range: 400 - 1525 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: DRC (Katanga), Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Limpopo, Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Mozambique distribution: T,MS
Growth form(s): Tree, shrub over 2 m.
