Description:
Aromatic perennial herb up to c. 60 cm tall, somewhat woody and branching near the base. Stems more or less densely covered with long spreading hairs, rarely almost hairless. Leaves opposite, linear-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, up to 5 cm long, more or less densely hairy, often with mixed long and short hairs; margin distinctly to obscurely toothed. Inflorescence simple or with a pair of branches near the base, lax, 8-20 cm long; verticils 4-6-flowered; bracts falling early, ovate, 3 × 2 mm. Calyx 6-8 mm long, glandular-hairy. Corolla white, pinkish, lilac or violet, 13-15 mm long; tube 9-12 mm long; lower lip 3 mm long. Stamens exserted beyond the lower lip.
Notes: This species has not yet been recorded from Mozambique but is very likely to occur as some known collections have been found very close to the border.
Derivation of specific name: canescens: covered with a grey pubescence or greyish in colour.
Habitat: Not known but most likely among rocks and in open places and water-courses in semi-arid woodland.

Flowering time:Nov - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Angola, Botswana, northern Namibia, Zimbabwe and Limpopo and Mpumalanga, South Africa. Likely to occur also in Mozambique as some known collections have been found very close to the border.
