Description: |
Perennial herb or suffrutex, up to 1.2 m tall, growing from a small woody rootstock, sometimes reduced to a thick underground woody stem. Stems 1-several, erect, quadrangular, branching, woody at base, pubescent. Leaves opposite, sometimes with clusters of younger leaves or shoots in axils, sessile or shortly petiolate, narrowly elliptic to ovate, up to 9 × 20 cm, sparsely to densely pubescent; veins raised or not beneath, diverging from midrib, curving before the margin; margin entire to serrate. Leaves subtending flower heads similar to other leaves, green or marked blue, sometimes paler at base, 7-20 mm long. Flowerheads 5-15 mm long, 5-10 mm in diameter with 6-flowered verticels. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, densely villous, enlarging in fruit. Corolla 2-lipped, blue, greyish, purple, or rarely white, 4-6 mm long; tube 3-4.5 mm long; upper lip 4-lobed with small median lobes. Nutlets 1-1.5 mm long, brown. |
Notes: | A variable species. Specimens from Mozambique and neighbouring Zimbabwe sometimes have broad leaves and dark blue or purple corollas, bracts and upper leaves. |
