Description:
Woody herb, suffrutex or scrambling shrub, up to 3 m tall. Older branches with persistent hook-like petiole bases. Leaves opposite, subopposite or 3-4-whorled, ovate or ovate-oblong up to 12 × 8 cm, more or less discolorous, thinly textured; petiole up to 5 cm long, distinctly articulated. Inflorescences in terminal, umbel-like heads. Calyx 6-8 mm long, hairless, lobes longer than the tube, ending in a filiform point. Corolla white or cream, sweet-scented; tube 14-19 mm long, slender, hairless; lobes subcircular, 3.5-4 mm long. Stamens and style long-exserted. Fruit subglobose, deep red or purplish-black.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: pleiosciadium: pleio: more than usual; sciadion: a parasol or umbel, referring to the clusters of flowers
Habitat: Mixed forest and woodland, riverine forest, roadsides and thickets on schist, deep sand and sandstone.
Altitude range: 100 - 1750 m

Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa (Limpopo Province).
