Description:
Large perennial climber or liana with milky latex. Stems up to 20 m long, hairless, pale brown, verrucose, flaky. Leaves broadly ovate, 9–14 cm long, 5–11 cm wide, somewhat discolorous; petiole up to 7 cm long. Inflorescences 10–30-flowered; peduncles 1–3 cm long, pedicles 4–5 mm long. Sepals sub-orbicular, 2 mm long and wide. Corolla hairless outside; tube campanulate, 5–6 mm long, inside of mouth papillate; lobes broadly elliptic to broadly ovate, spreading, 6–7 mm long and wide, inside papillate, pink, maroon, dark red or violet to deep violet. Corona set in lower half of corolla tube; lobes violet to maroon, 2 mm long. Follicles vary narrowly deltoid-ellipsoid to deltoid-ovoid, 2-edged, 11–25 cm long, 2–4 cm diameter, hairless.
Notes: The specimen in the photographs (Wursten BW1670, March 30 2017) represents the first record for Mozambique South of the Zambezi River.
