Description: |
Suffrutex or small shrub up to 2 m high. Stem usually single, slender, greenish, smooth. Leaves variable, up to c. 20 cm long, pinnate or 3-foliolate, sometimes leaves or parts of it not fully divided into separate leaflets; leaflets narrowly elliptic to slightly lanceolate, up to 9 cm long, entirely hairless, sharply pointed to somewhat rounded at the apex; margin entire but distinctly thickened. Flowers small greenish-yellow, in double umbels 7-10 cm in diameter, terminal on main stem and on lateral branches. Fruit a small capsule, obovoid, 3-9 mm long. |
Notes: | Although var. stenophylla and var. transvaalensis are both claimed to occur in Mozambique by some authors, we have put all specimens under var. transvaalensis until more details are available. Var. stenophylla is said to differ in more elliptic leaflets with a rounded apex. This species is generally very similar to H. involucrata but can be distinguished by the narrower leaflets which are entirely hairless; generally smaller less densely flowered inflorescences and more greenish flowers. |
