Description:
Small to medium-sized tree. Leaves opposite, narrowly lanceolate, dark green. Flowers in branched, axillary heads, creamy-white, showy; petals falling separately; filaments long, c. 4 cm. Fruit up to 4.5 cm in diameter, oval to spherical, yellow when ripe.
Notes: Introduced for its striking flowers and the edible fruit. Known as an occasional naturalised escape in Zimbabwe; it is included in the Appendix to the Mozambican checklist as a possible escape. Definite records are needed.
Derivation of specific name: jambos: from a Malayan name for this species.
