Description:
Shrub or small tree. Leaves ovate to almost circular, veining conspicuous beneath; margin coarsely dentate or crenate. Flowers in terminal and axillary panicles, cream with anthers conspicuously red. Fruit a conical woody capsule, surrounded by the persistent corolla.
Notes: In this treatment we have not distinguished between subsp. abdessammadii (confined to Mozambique in the FZ area) and subsp. wildemanianum (Gilg) Wild which occurs in the Caprivi Strip, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Derivation of specific name: abdessammadii: after Mohammed abd es-Ssamadi, Kenyan who companied German botanist Georg August Schweinfurth during his travels in East Africa in the 19th century.
