Description:
Tufted perennial herb with unbranched stems, usually less than c. 20 cm long. Leaves opposite, sessile, ovate, oblong or almost round, up to 25 × 15 mm, with prominent translucent gland dots; apex obtuse or rounded; margin entire but often rolled under. Flowers c. 2.5 cm in diameter, in terminal clusters, rarely solitary; sepals lanceolate, acuminate, subequal, with translucent and dark glad dots; petals yellow, often tinged with red with dark gland dots scattered on margins and lamina; stamens numerous; styles usually 3, rarely 4 and ovary 3-locular. Fruit a capsule, erect.
Notes: See the similar H. peplidifolium for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: aethiopicum: of Ethiopia, a historic name for large parts of Africa
Habitat: Occurring mostly in grassland.

Worldwide distribution: Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and North-east South Africa. Subsp. aethiopicum is confined to the Cape, South Africa.
