Description:
More or less prostrate perennial herb with more or less densely setulose stems and branches. Leaves deeply palmately lobed with 3-5 narrowly elliptic oblong to lanceolate lobes; sparsely setulose, mainly on the veins; margin irregularly toothed or somewhat lobed again; petiole up to 6 cm long. Stipules filiform, c. 3 mm long. Flowers 3-3.5 cm in diameter, pale yellow, with or without a dark maroon-red centre. Epicalix of 7-8 filiform or narrowly linear bracts, 12-5 mm long. Calyx 10-15 mm long with lobes more or less narrowly triangular, joined at the base for 2-3 mm. Capsule subglobose, 8-9 mm in diameter, sparsely pubescent.

Derivation of specific name: palmatus: palmate, like a hand; referring to the leaf-shape.
Habitat: In Mopane woodland or other dry deciduous woodland, often on alluvial soils.

Worldwide distribution: From Sudan and Eritrea along the eastern side of Africa South to the Northern Provinces of South Africa and Eswatini. Also in Namibia and Angola. Extending East to the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Pakistan and India.
