Description:
Perennial herb with prostrate or spreading stems growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to ovate, up to 7 cm long, 3-5-veined from the base, hairy on both surfaces, especially on the veins, rounded to slightly cordate at the base, basal setae sometimes present; margin crenate to crenate-serrate; petiole up to 8 mm long, setulose-hairy; stipules setaceous, up to 6 mm long, pubescent. Flowers in 1-3-flowered leaf-opposed clusters on peduncles up to 2.5 cm long; pedicels upto 8 mm long; bracts similar to stipules. Sepals linear-lanceolate, upto 10 mm long, setulose hairy outside. Petals oblanceolate to obovate, slightly shorter than sepals, yellow. Capsule 2.5-5 cm long on a straight pedicel,apex undivided, hairless or sparsely sabrous on the angles.
Notes: This species is generally very similar to Corchorus trilocularis but clearly differs in being a perennial.
Derivation of specific name: confusus: confusing, referring to the fact that this species had long been confused in herbaria with Corchorus trilocularis.
Habitat: Mainly in woodland at low altitudes.
