Description:
Succulent perennial, 10-60 cm tall. Stems glabrous, branching from the base, erect or shortly decumbent, thick, 1.5-3 cm in diameter with a diamond-shaped pattern of shallow tubercles. Tubercles c. 1.5 × 1 cm with circular leaf scars at each apex; leaf scars without prickles. Leaves c. 9 × 4 cm, subsessile, obovate, fleshy, crowded towards the apex of the stems. Cymes axillary, simple. Cyathia c. 4 × 3.5 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; gland c. 2mm tall, cream with yellow rim. Capsule c. 6 × 6 mm, with a pair of fleshy crested ridges along the sutures, exserted on a reflexed pedicel.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: lugardiae: named after Charlotte Eleanor Lugard-Howard, professional painter and plant collector who was married to Major Edward James Lugard. Both collected extensively in Botswana.
Habitat: On granite outcrops and among rocks in sandy miombo woodland and wooded grassland; also in shade on termite mounds.
