Description:
Rhizomatous trailing or climbing perennial herb. Stems up to 2 m long, sparingly pubescent. Leaves 3-foliolate; median leaflet simple; lateral leaflets 2-lobed, so that the whole leaf may appear 5-partite. Leaf base cordate with 2 minute glandular stipels near the apex of the petiole. Inflorescences axillary on peduncles 2-11 cm long. Bracts leaf-like, up to 2 cm long, ovate, 3(-5)-lobed, yellowish-green to creamy-white. Flowers unisexual enveloped in the bracts in different inflorescences on the same plant. Fruit 4 × 8 mm, smooth, pubescent, reddish-brown or blackish.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: galpinii: named for E.E. Galpin, South African naturalist and collector (1858 - 1941)
Habitat: High-rainfall woodland, often in stony or rocky places; also by roadsides.
