Description:
Erect, scrambling or climbing shrubby perennial with a large tuberous root. Stems hairless to velvety, up to 2.5 m long, sometimes flowering before the leaves are fully developed. Leaflets 3, ovate to circular, varying widely, even on the same plant, from entire to deeply 3-lobed; petiole usually much longer than the rhachis (but not always in Zimbabwean and S African specimens where they may be subequal - see pictures). Flowers in axillary and terminal racemes, peduncles up to 20 cm long. Standard inside and the wings, bluish-violet. Pods 6-11 cm, dehiscent, swollen, appressed brown-silky-hairy.
