Description:
Tall perennial herb, up to 2 to 3 m, which dies back in winter. Stems angular and ribbed, hairy. Leaves 3-foliolate, dark green and rough above, paler and hairy beneath; margins finely dentate. Inflorescences terminal and in the upper leaf axils, branched, many-flowered. Flowers light to deep pink, occasionally white.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: hookeri: in 1841 named after Sir William Jackson Hooker, first director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew.
Habitat: In various types of woodland, bracken scrub and grass, rocky terrain and road sides.
Altitude range: Up to 1740 m
Flowering time:Jan - Mar
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa from Ethiopia southwards to Angola and South Africa
