Description: |
Shrubby woody herb, up to 2 m high, growing from a taproot or woody rootstock. Stems strongly ribbed, reddish-brown with appressed whitish, brownish or black hairs. Leaves imparipinnate, with 5-11 leaflets; rhachis and petiole together up to 3 cm long; leaflets oblanceolate or oblong, up to 20 mm long, often folded, sparsely strigulose above, more densely so and paler beneath. Flowers in racemes up to 5 cm long, rarely longer, usually up to twice the length of the leaves, laxely up to 30-flowered. Calyx 2.5-4 mm long, densely appressed hairy with dark brown or blackish hairs. Corolla 15 mm long, deep pinkish-red; standard densely dark reddish-brown hairy on the back. Pod cylindric, 30-48 mm long, densely brack strigulose and with some whitish hairs, apex with a persistent beak. |
Notes: | This species has long been confused with Indigofera hedyantha which differs in being a shorter, pyrophytic, often mat-forming herb with much longer racemes. |
Derivation of specific name: | goetzei: after Walter Goetze (1872-1899), German naturalist, explorer, photographer and collector of botanical and zoological specimens in Tanzania. |
Habitat: | In montane grassland, on hillsides of miombo woodland, often near rocky outcrops, dambos or streams. |
