Description:
Erect annual or short-lived perennial herb, up to 1.7 m tall. Stems with some ascending branches, ribbed, appressed hairy, particularly when young. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, usually up to c. 11 cm long, thinly appressed puberulous below. Flowers in long many-flowered racemes. Standard yellow with reddish-purple veining on the outside. Keel shallowly rounded at the middle with a short incurved beak, shorter than the wings. Pod subsessile, cylindrical, up to 3.8 × 0.6 cm, sometimes, curved at the tip, appressed puberulous.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: lanceolata: lanceolate or spear-shaped, referring to the shape of the leaflets.
Habitat: In open woodland, grassland and disturbed places, sometimes in moist places.
Altitude range: 0 - 1450 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa as far as the Eastern Cape, and Madagascar.
