Description:
Straggling succulent perennial up to c. 25 cm high. Leaves opposite, sessile, 2-4.5 cm long, succulent, subcylindric, grooved along the upper surface, fresh green, finely papillose. Flowers in several-flowered, forked inflorescences, up to 25 mm in diameter, pinkish-purple, sweetly scented.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: mahonii: for John Mahon (1870-1906), Irishman who worked as a gardener at Kew, a forester in Malawi and was curator of Entebbe Botanic Garden in Uganda. He collected the type specimen on a trip in Zimbabwe.
Habitat: In Mopane woodlandand grassland but also in rockcrevices and on sandy soils.
