Description:
Tall, banana-like tree up to 8m, with a fan-shaped crown.
Notes: This species was formerly considered conspecific with Strelitzia nicolai, which is now restricted to the coastal region of eastern South Africa. In leaf only, it could be confused with Ensete ventricosum but it differs from that species in the long leafless woody stem and the distinctly stalked, greyish-green leaves.
Derivation of specific name: caudata: abruptly ending in a long tail-like tip
Habitat: In high altitude areas of steeply sloped grassland or ericoid scrub.

Worldwide distribution: Border mountains of Zimbabwe and Mozambique (including Mt Gorongosa), Eswatini and Limpopo, Mpumalanga, South Africa.
