Description:
Perennial herb, 20-35 cm tall, growing from corms. Leaves 2-3 basal, terete, 1-2 mm wide, developing long before the flowers appear and usually dry and broken at flowering time; 2 more leaves along the stem, short and completely sheathing. Inflorescence 3-6-flowered. Flowers pale pink to purplish with the lower tepals yellow in the basal part and darker pink at the apex.
Notes: Note: the unusual flowering time during the winter months, the dimorphic leaves and the small size of plant and flowers distinguishes this species from others. See Gladiolus zimbabweensis for comparison.
Derivation of specific name: juncifolius : leaves like a Juncus, referring to the terete leaves.
Habitat: Occurring in rocky areas of montane grassland.
