Description:
Bulbous perennial herb, 20-40(60) cm high, flowering before leaves; bulb 5-8 cm wide, scales and flesh reddish; leaves c. 35 x 1.2-1.5 cm, linear to lanceolate, grooved, tough and stiff; scape erect, up to 4 mm in diameter at lowest flower; raceme 8-26 cm long, lax to relatively dense, 25-60 flowers; bracts c. 3 mm long with 1 or 2 spurs c. 0.5 mm long, one in the middle and 1 at base of bract; pedicels 2.5-11 mm long; perianth segments spreading, 6-8 mm long, white to greenish-white with purplish to greenish midrib; capsule broadly fusiform with blunt ends, 10-14 x 6-10 mm, dry perianth segments forming a cap on developing capsule; seeds c. 8 x 4 mm.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sanguinea: blood-red, referring to the colour of the bulbs and bulb scales.
