Description:
Perennial herb up to 40 cm high, growing from a subglobose tuber. Leaves 2-5, present together with the flowers, ovate, up to 9 cm long, hairless, basally channelled. Inflorescence up to 50-flowered raceme on a peduncle up to 20 cm long. Bracts ovate, 1-2 mm long. Pedicels up to 25 mm long. Flowers up to 12 mm in diameter, bell-shaped with equal tepals, bright yellow with a green mid-vein. Capsule obovoid, c.8 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: mackenii: after Mark Johnston McKen (1823-1872), Scottish plant collector and herbarium curator at the Durban Botanic Gardens.
Habitat: In rocky grassland.
Altitude range: 50 - 1900 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
