Caespitose perennial; culms up to 150 cm high. Leaves pilose with a few long hairs near the ligule only, often tinged with red; ligule 0.5–1.5 mm long; laminas 12–21 cm long, 4–5 mm wide, broadest at about the middle, switch-like, scabrid on the margins, very gradually tapering at the apex to a thread-like point. Inflorescence 17–38 cm long, elongated and ± interrupted, reddish. Racemes 10–28 mm long, tinged with red; internodes and pedicels pilose with silvery-white hairs. Sessile spikelet 4–7 mm long; inferior glume with a broad U-shaped median groove and scabrid flanges in the upper 1/4, entire at the apex; superior lemma linear, bifid to about the middle; awn 10–16 mm long, with well developed column; anthers 1.6–3(4) mm long, straw-coloured. Pedicelled spikelet 4.5–7.5 mm long. |
