Description:
Tufted perennial from a woody rootstock. Culms 1.2–2.4 m. high, the base bulbous and clad in pubescent or tomentose leaf-sheaths. Panicle 20–40 cm. long, linear, contracted, occasionally the branches villous, the spikelets in groups of (2)3 on short pedicels. Spikelets 25–35 mm. long, light brown, glabrous (rarely the inferior glume pubescent). Inferior glume 3–5 length of spikelet. Inferior lemma 5(7)-nerved. Superior lemma sparsely pubescent, the lobes acuminate to a setiform apex, with a central awn 4–12 cm. long.
