Description: |
Tufted annual or short-lived perennial, sometimes tussock-forming perennial grass without rhizomes. Culms up to 100 cm tall, erect or ascending, stout or wiry, sometimes rooting from the lower nodes, usually with a ring of elongated glands below the nodes; ligule a line of hairs. Leaves linear, 3–25 cm long, flat or rolled in, hairless or sparsely set with tubercle-based hairs, without glands. Panicle narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic, 8–40 cm long, loose and open; pedicels 0.5–2.5 mm long. Spikelets linear to narrowly elliptic-oblong, 3–8 mm long, lightly laterally compressed, 4–14-flowered. Glumes subequal, lanceolate in profile, thinly membranous, 1.5–2.7 mm long, lightly keeled, scaberulous on the keel; lemmas narrowly oblong-elliptic in profile, 1.5–2 mm long, lightly keeled. |

Habitat: | Floodplains, dambos and wooded grassland, in alluvial sandy soils at river banks and lake-shores, in granite sandveld and on Kalahari Sand; also in disturbed ground and often as a weed of irrigated crops. |
